Depending on whom you ask, carbohydrates are either the best or worst things for your diet. Some people try to eliminate them from their diets completely, while others have been reported of eating only potatoes for an entire year. But what’s really healthy? Are-carbs-good-or-bad? The Doc did some research to find out.
What are carbohydrates?
Carbohydrates are the sugars, starches and fibres found in fruits, grains, vegetables and milk products. They’re one of the three macronutrients essential for a healthy life and are the body’s main source of energy.
Simple vs complex carbohydrates
Carbs are divided into two main categories: simple and complex. The difference between the two is their chemical structure and the way sugars are broken down and absorbed. Generally, simple carbohydrates are broken down quicker and more easily than complex carbohydrates.
Simple carbohydrates are found in dairy products, lollies, and other typically sugary foods. Because these are broken down and absorbed quickly, you might feel a sudden burst of energy after consuming these products, however it rarely lasts long.
On the other hand, complex carbohydrates are broken down relatively slowly and therefore provide more sustained energy. These are found in beans, lentils, potatoes, and whole grain breads and cereals.
Carbohydrates and weight
Many people believe that eating carbs will make you gain weight, and restricting them will make you lose weight. The truth is, eating the right kinds of carbs and the right portions of it can actually help you to lose and maintain a healthy weight. Book in with the Doc to help you work out what portion you should be eating. If you aim to limit simple carbs, such as those found in processed, sugary foods, and consume healthy portions of whole grains and starchy vegetables, you’re likely to see positive results. This is because many starchy vegetables contain fibre. Fibre helps you feel fuller for longer and aids with digestion.
